JU people

Just a few miscellaneous pics of people and performers at JU.

JU crew

Thanks to all who made JU a successful event. A great Committee: Brenton Holmes, Cameron Smith, Courtney Stark and Eric Pozza. A great venue: Bill Arnett from the Folkus Room, now in the extensive Italo-Australian Club. Great sound: Kev Austin and George Pass of Active Clear Sound. Recording and live broadcasting courtesy of Chris Deacon, Lauren Black, Neal Gowen and others at our Arts Partner, ArtSound. And our sponsors and supporters and string of volunteers. Thanks to all.

JU Getz

Getz should have been the smooth stage, but some loud and bluesy Mingus snuck its way in. Perhaps the nicest venue for the numbers, with café tables and relaxed surroundings, although with some minor sound interference from the coffee making and the M-Basers next door. Some lovely trios here, but Dave Rodriguez doing James Muller’s Thrum album and the joyous exhuberance of transcribed Mingus from All the Things you would be if Sigmund Freud's wife was your mother (!) did it for me.

JU M-Base

Number 3 downstairs. Generally the funky stage, although shared with AFATM at the smooth end. Big area, food and bar. This is M-Base, a way of life, not just a musical style. I particularly noted some shredding from Utopia Collective and orchestrated horns reminiscent of Mingus from Lakeside Circus, and two Committee Cam and Courtney from the JU Committee played in Kooky.

JU Bley

Bley was number 2 stage upstairs. It was well isolated sonically, a neat size, although could have done with some decoration or curtains (next year). But it got a series of capable contemporary jazz bands, and represented the women in jazz via Carla Bley.
