Many happy returns

It's a regular event and quite fascinating in its presentation of development through musical education.  Jinbo Huang comes regularly to Wesley and I've seen him and the students playing this day over time.  This time, Naomi, Daniel, Arabella, Charlie and presumably sons Frank and Charles.  They play a range of composers, some obvious and challenging, Chopin and Liszt, some more forgiving, interestingly this time, one very much more theatrical or filmic.  Some names were more obscure - Gurlitt, Burgmuller, Yu, Tertu - but even amongst these some themes were well known.  Perhaps listeners to ABC Classics would know of them.  And the peak of Chopin and Schubert and Liszt, the impromptus and waltzes and that Campanella were a blast and a display of significant chops.  So, again, something more than would otherwise be expected.

Naomi Feng, Daniel Zhao, Arabella Lu, Charlie Sanoubane, Frank Huang and Charles Huang are piano students of Jinbo Huang.  They performed at Wesley.

Annual outings

Again Jinbo Huang brought his students to Wesley for a concert outing.  I've seen several of these and they are always rewarding, starting as they are with younger, newer players on simpler yet still satisfying pieces, and working up to the major works and perhaps working up in volume.  Certainly volume this day!  The other aspect I noticed this was the arrival of film and game themes.  I've been watching this is classical outings and even played a very successful and popular film theme outing with NCO so I was not at all surprised.  Film and games is a location for much contemporary orchestral and classical instrumental music these days.  I expect the film connections but I'm old enough to be somewhat flummoxed by the games, but so be it.  Things change.  Games are a huge business and composition is part of it.  So the concert started with the theme from Interstellar and finished with some very raucous Game of Thrones music, with Bach and Haydn and Chopin and Schubert and a few lesser names between.  I'll just mention the final two players.  Charles Huang with some delightful Schubert impromptus and Damien Ruan with some very stormy and voluminous Game of Thrones music.  Suffice to say I set my recording levels on Damien's warmup.

Kids today

Well not all kids can play piano like this crew.  They are students from the piano studio of teacher Jinbo Huang and they played a Wesley Wednesday lunchtime concert.  It's amusing how they go on stage, all of 10 years or so, but ranging in age, all dressed to the nines, looking very presentable, very young and quite small, at a grand piano, perhaps paired for a four handed duet, then you listen.  They were good, some very good.  I still notice adults with their depth of emotions, but the older ones here are showing that and the younger still present very satisfying youthful compositions (titles included The puppet and T-Rex hungry, no less!) through simpler Brahms and Beethoven and Strauss Snr to the movements from the Pathetique and Schubert Impromptu.  This is a mightily impressive crew and a pleasure to hear.  We can only look forward to some lovely playing around town.
