It's election time and even if the current government won't recognise climate change for the emergency it is, some will. The Home of all Parliaments, for one, which has declared a "climate emergency" as have the informed types who turned out for Bob Brown's gathering on the lawn in front of Parliament House to join the anti-Adani convoy, if only in spirit. We just caught the end of it, hearing Bob's voice over a PA as we walked to the venue but we were there in spirit.
We, the conservatives, who respect our enlightenment institutions, like science and informed citizenry. Who disavow the slinky maths and managed agreements that have us meeting Paris targets "in a canter". Misinformation, perhaps lies. The election will be a test. Are Australians sensible or dumb or misinformed or just plain self-interested. Does civilisation have a future past a century or two? Do our own grandchildren have to deal with +4degC and runaway temperatures? How often can we lose fish in the Darling or have floods that kill 1/2 million cattle or bushfires that sweep states and continue with our known world. Time to panic with Greta.The Anti-Adani convoy rallied with supporters outside Parliament House.

Not quite sure what to say about this. Yes, there is such a thing as climate change and despite what you may have been told in the media, the jury is most certainly still out about what the impact of humans is on that process. But it certainly does not need to be called an "emergency". No doubt the emergence of hysteria will push some people one way or another, but you know what happened to Chicken Little don't you? The Dutch boy with his finger in the dyke had the same result.
Not sure who is saying this, but basically, I don't agree. I don't have an "opinion" on this. I am just being conservative and accepting the advice of established institutions (eg, CSIRO, BOM, NASA, IPCC). There are numerous tropes about "climate change has always existed", "Australia is a small actor", "what's the cost of action", etc and they have successfully confused the public and stalled action. Just one line from CSIRO: "Warming of the climate system is unequivocal, and since the 1950s, many of the observed changes are unprecedented over decades to millennia. The atmosphere and ocean have warmed, the amounts of snow and ice have diminished, sea level has risen, and the concentrations of greenhouse gases have increased."
